RECENT WORKS:
While this journey truly began with the Forever Yonge series, it has grown out of a forty year relationship I have had with the 'near north'. Magnificent skies frame ever present bones in the endless nuances of land. The seasons whisper of imminent arrivals (long before it can be perceived in a city environment) and the quality of light traces the passage of time on the lake up the road. I am indeed fortunate to have a 'Northern Sanctuary' studio nestled in the Almaguin Highlands where time slows...breath goes in... breath goes out and I venture out each evening at the same time to watch the symphony of light at Pilger's launch change its melody.
In these new works, the topogrophies of land and spirit begin to blur together as inner 'landscapes' resonate with the outer vistas.
FOREVER YONGE: THE SERIES
Sometimes in life it is the journey, not necessarily the destination, that holds the ‘gift’. This series marks the beginning of a closer look at moments in the passage up highway 11 to my humble ‘cabina’ in the woods outside of North Bay.
As any ‘northerner’ will probably boast, Highway 11 is really just an extension of Yonge street in Toronto! I have been struck by this paradox for over three decades. Exquisitely open skies hold particular fascination for this ‘city girl’ but I am also intrigued by the graphic evidence of man’s etching through rock and soil. There can be a cold, hard beauty in the lines cut by man but they are made even more compelling when softened by the framing of nature.
These ‘roadscapes’ mark a return to a career that I began as a painter many years ago and are a celebration of all of the circles that bring us back ‘home’. This is indeed the beginning of an unfinished conversation...
